“Community Design should encourage social interaction and at the same time allow residents to choose whether to be with others or to be alone. When you walk into cohousing, you should always feel that you have the choice between as much privacy as you want and as much community as you want. In typical suburban neighbourhoods you feel as if you have the choice of as much privacy as you want – and little opportunity for community.” – Charles Durrett
In the cohousing development model the future residents participate in the planning, design and development of the community so that it directly responds to their needs. In our early discussions we have identified the following priorities:
- Physically warm and welcoming
- Lots of green – generous shared courtyard, roof garden, planters on decks, and vertical gardens
- Outdoor common areas to include gathering spaces, integrated children’s adventure play areas, outdoor eating and cooking, and rainwater collection
- Pet friendly
- Lots of natural light in the units
- Good quality standard finishing with opportunities for optional upgrades to allow for financial diversity
- Some common areas on every floor
- Shared amenities to include kitchen and dining area for shared common meals, guest room, play spaces, studio space for activities such as tai chi and yoga, workshop. and other amenities to support the needs of a diverse community
Our team of professionals are working closely with our community of members to achieve these design goals.
